Signs of Cooling System Trouble that We Can Fix at Our Kansas City Auto Shop
Cooling systems feature various important parts, such as the radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, and pressure cap. If there's a problem with any component of your cooling system, then there's an escalated risk of overheating causing major engine problems. At Howard Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at identifying and repairing cooling system issues.
Symptoms of Cooling System Failure
When overheating occurs, cooling system leaks are often to blame. If your coolant has gotten mysteriously low, then you could be dealing with a leak. An internal coolant leak can lead to a heavy amount of white exhaust smoke, which is symptomatic of a blown head gasket. With an external coolant leak, you may find bright green fluid on the ground where you've been parked, though your coolant could be a different color like yellow, orange, or pink. A coolant leak can cause fluid pressure to decrease, consequently lower the coolant's boiling point. This makes it more likely that you'll see white steam emerging from underneath your hood. You may also have a coolant leak if your coolant warning light has flashed on.
Another sign of trouble is that your temp gauge has ascended into the red zone. When this occurs, you can safely pull over and give the shop a call and describe the situation. Then you can be advised on whether it seems safe to drive any further. In the event that you need to add coolant, make sure you first let your engine cool off. If your engine is still hot when you open the cap to add coolant, then scorching fluid may spray up and burn you.
