Complete these Important Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Engine Healthy

Complete these Important Maintenance Tasks to Keep Your Engine HealthyTo keep your engine healthy and minimize the risk of major problems arising, you'll want to always stay current with your car's maintenance requirements. At Howard Automotive, our local mechanics can complete maintenance tasks that will help to ensure your engine remains in great shape well into the future.

Important Types of Engine Maintenance

One of the kindest things you can do for your engine is to keep it running on the right amount of clean oil, which makes it very important that you stay current with the oil change schedule specified in your owner's manual. With the proper level of uncontaminated oil, your engine's moving parts will remain properly lubricated and protected from serious damage that metal-on-metal contact could cause.

It's also important that you replace filters as necessary. Air filters should be changed out every 12,000 to 15,000 miles so that the right amount of air can reach the combustion chamber. If you're driving with a gunked-up filter, then airflow could be impeded, which could cause emissions to increase and gas mileage to decrease. Fuel filters should be replaced about every 25,000 miles so that contaminants don't hurt engine performance and/or fuel-efficiency.

Another important measure is to replace your timing belt as needed. Generally, timing belts are supposed to be replaced at some point between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. However, it's best to check your owner's manual and adhere to the mileage point listed in it. If you delay timing belt replacement, then the belt could break and cause severe engine problems.

You'll also want to stay up-to-date with cooling system service. Commonly, it's suggested that coolant gets exchanged every 30,000 miles, but you should check your owner's manual to see your car's exact needs. To prevent overheating from causing major engine damage, you'll want to make sure your cooling system remains in excellent shape.
